How we build our data

  • Every figure comes from a government source we opened ourselves: a state statute or revenue department, the IRS, or the Treasury. Each page names the agency, the table and the date we read it.
  • We keep a copy of every file we relied on and record, for every row, where in the source it came from. You can download the extract behind each page.
  • Automated checks re-add totals and re-compute percentages before anything is published, and every number on these pages is matched back to the extract when the site is built.
  • Each dataset has a review date. Past it, the page is held until the sources are read again.
