What a CP01S means

A CP01S is an acknowledgment. The IRS says it received your identity theft claim, and that any refund you're due will be sent after it finishes reviewing the claim. source 1

It doesn't ask for money and it isn't the end of the case. We read it as a receipt: the claim is in, and the review is underway.

The date that counts

The IRS page doesn't set a response date for a CP01S. It describes the review as ongoing and says any refund comes after the review is finished. source 1

Why people get one

  • You filed an identity theft claim with the IRS, for example on Form 14039.
  • The IRS is reviewing the claim before it releases any refund on your account.

First steps

  1. Check your IRS online account (typed in yourself at irs.gov) to see the notice and confirm it's real.
  2. Keep the notice with your copy of the identity theft claim and a note of the date it arrived.
  3. Consider getting an IP PIN through your online account for added protection. source 1
  4. Use the IRS Identity Theft Central guidance on reporting the theft to law enforcement, credit bureaus and financial institutions, and on protecting your children's taxpayer numbers too. source 1
  5. Keep filing on time. The IRS notes that an extension to file doesn't extend the time to pay. source 1

What not to do

  • Don't file a second identity theft claim for the same problem just because this one is still under review.
  • Don't act on a link or phone number from an unexpected email or text that claims to be about this notice. Use irs.gov, typed in yourself.
  • Don't stop filing or paying while the claim is open. Penalties and interest still follow late payments. source 1
