CP2501: the IRS asks about income that doesn't match

A CP2501 says income reported by employers or banks doesn't match your return. It isn't a bill, but it needs an answer by the date on it.

What a CP2501 means

A CP2501 is the IRS saying: the income or payment information it got from third parties, like employers or banks, doesn't line up with your return. The difference could raise your tax, lower it, or change nothing. source 1

It is not a bill, but the IRS says you must respond. source 1 Inside the IRS, the CP2501 is the letter sent to get more information before a CP2000 goes out. source 2

We think of it as the early, quieter version of a CP2000. Answer it well and the matter can end here.

The date that counts

Reply by the date listed on your notice. The IRS page doesn't give a separate day count; the notice prints the date. If you need more time, the IRS says to send the extension request using one of the reply options. source 1

Why people get one

  • A Form W-2 or 1099 was sent to the IRS but the income didn't make it onto your return.
  • Income was reported on the return, but on a different line or form than the payer used, so the match failed.
  • A payer reported something wrong, or reported income that isn't yours.

First steps

  1. Read the whole notice and put it beside your return and the forms you got for that year (Forms W-2 and 1099).
  2. Check your IRS online account, typed in yourself at irs.gov, to see the notice and your balance or payments.
  3. If you agree, sign the response form and send it by one of the reply options on the notice. On a joint return, both spouses sign. source 1
  4. If you disagree, send the signed response form with a signed statement explaining why, plus copies of your documents and any expenses tied to that income. source 1
  5. If you have other income, credits or expenses to report, the IRS asks for a Form 1040-X with CP2501 written at the top, sent with your response form. source 1
  6. Keep copies of everything you send and a note of the date and method.

What not to do

  • Don't ignore it. Inside the IRS, a CP2000 is the next step when there's no reply to a CP2501. source 2
  • Don't send originals. Send copies and keep the originals.
  • Don't pay or send documents through a link or phone number in an unexpected email or text. Use irs.gov, typed in yourself.
  • Don't file a stand-alone amended return instead of answering. Send it with the response form, as the notice asks. source 1

Questions

Is a CP2501 a bill?

No. The IRS says it isn't a bill, but a response is required. source 1

What happens if I don't answer a CP2501?

Under the IRS's own procedures, a CP2000 is issued after a CP2501 when the taxpayer doesn't respond. source 2

Can someone else deal with the IRS about my CP2501?

Yes. The IRS says you can complete the Authorization section of the response form, or file Form 2848 so a representative such as a tax professional can act for you. source 1

What if the income on the CP2501 isn't mine?

Explain it in a signed statement with your response form. If someone used your name and Social Security number, the IRS points to Form 14039 to report identity theft. source 1
